Furthermore, looking back from when you first entered the field to now, have you noticed any changes in sport psychology? In what ways? Has your perspective changed? Additionally, have you had any experiences with athletes that reinforced your dedication to this profession?

The next set of questions focused on research and trends to identify differences between experienced professionals and newer entrants. Besides LinkedIn, do you use any other technologies in your practice, such as social media, texting, or email? If you use them in interventions, are they helpful, and how? Despite technological advancements, are there any research questions or issues that remain unresolved for you? Regarding research trends, are there specific areas within sport psychology that you consider more important than others?

The following section of questions addressed coaching perspectives, diversity within populations, and ethical dilemmas. For example, considering your coaching roles in LI and Rochester, do you recommend the universal application of certain interventions by all coaches? How would you describe your approach to working with diverse populations? Have you faced any ethical challenges while working with athletes? If so, what were they? What do you consider the most valuable tool in youth sports compared to elite-level sports? When facing ethical dilemmas, what is your initial approach to resolving them? With the evolving landscape of LGBTQIA+ inclusivity, how has this impacted your practice? Lastly, have you encountered any ethical dilemmas involving diverse populations, such as age, race, skill level, or culture? If so, how did you handle them, and did they affect your approach to working with athletes?

The final segment consisted of rapid-fire questions designed to elicit brief responses. How can sport psychology and performance be improved? Is an advanced degree necessary for top executives in your field? What are the primary requirements for success in your profession? How can someone gain more insights into this industry?

Among the array of questions, those concerning LGBTQ issues, coaching perspectives, and the use of social media platforms stood out due to their nuanced nature. Dr. Rich provided insights from both personal and professional perspectives, prompting me to seek additional information because of the limited data available in these areas. Of particular interest was the definition of sport psychology. Winter and Collins (2016) investigated the professional status of sport psychologists, highlighting the difficulties in defining the field. Dr. Rich echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for more research to clearly articulate the essence of sport psychology to both professionals and the general public. This new understanding holds potential for refining my practice and introducing new perspectives on the profession.

Limitations

One aspect that caught my attention was Dr. Rich’s ethical decision-making process. While he couldn’t recall specific ethical dilemmas, his stance on LGBTQ issues showed a dual perspective. This ethical duality mirrors findings by Sharp and Lodge (2013), who identified key components for building effective sport psychology relationships. Despite the emphasis on trust and professional knowledge, Dr. Rich’s stance highlights the potential conflict between practitioner duties and coaching priorities. Although the research underscores the importance of these components in fostering professional relationships, the divergence in decision-making between practitioners and coaches requires further investigation.
