Conditioning and Learning Plan

Part 1: Scenario

Instructions
Scenario and Behavior
Describe the scenario and the behavior you would like to change. Use the language of behavioral theory and operant conditioning to describe your scenario.Alex, a 12-year-old boy, has a tendency to scatter his backpack and clothes all over the living room upon returning home. His parents find this behavior undesirable and are committed to altering it.
Alex’s parents initiated operant conditioning to instruct him to hang his clothes and backpack upon arrival home.
During the training, Alex receives chocolate and praise from his parents every time he hangs his clothes and backpack.
As Alex’s desired behavior stabilizes, his parents intermittently reward him with either chocolate or praise. They are deliberately employing behavioral theory principles.

Notes
Targeted Response:The behavior aimed to be seen is the routine of hanging clothes and backpacks upon returning home.Alex’s parents aspire to nurture their child with good manners and cultivate a cleanliness habit.
Primary ReinforcerChocolate is utilized as a primary reinforcer to positively reinforce the behavior of hanging clothes and backpacks.Chocolate serves as an effective primary reinforcer for children, as they are often enticed by sweets (Jessel et al., 2020; Szabo, 2019).
Secondary ReinforcerPraising the child for hanging clothes and backpacks serves as a secondary reinforcement.Children derive happiness and motivation from receiving admiration for their positive behavior, rendering praise an effective tool for encouraging repeated actions (Leijten et al., 2019).
Schedules of ReinforcementAlex’s parents will employ a combination of variable-ratio and variable-interval schedules.Variable ratio entails Alex receiving chocolate after a variable number of instances of hanging his clothes and backpacks, while variable interval involves him receiving chocolate after a variable time period of consistently hanging his belongings daily.
This combination is intended to solidify the habit of hanging clothes and backpacks with a reduced likelihood of extinction (Johnson et al., 2022).
ShapingInitially, Alex’s parents will provide chocolate each time he hangs his clothes and backpack to establish the behavior.Once accustomed, they will transition to variable reinforcement (variable ratio and variable interval) to sustain his motivation and consistent performance (Hargreaves et al., 2020).
Optional follow-up:It is crucial for parents to instill basic manners and responsibilities in their children during adolescence. Operant conditioning and reinforcement are effective strategies to achieve this objective. The habits and behaviors learned during formative years tend to endure into adulthood (Simanjuntak et al., 2022).
