Government Data

In 2018, there were 12,759 individuals under the age of 18 living below the poverty line in the United States, while 4,893 people aged 65 and older were also below the poverty line (U.S. Census Bureau, 2018).

Psychologists utilize government data to draw insights from the vast population information available (U.S. Census Bureau, 2018).

Using the Library

In the Capella University Library, a search for “children and poverty” in Summons yielded 2,450,109 results.

When using PSYCArticles database in the Capella library, narrowing the search to peer-reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2018 yielded 1,752 results. Further refining the search to include articles under the subject “mental health” resulted in 94 articles.

However, the articles retrieved did not specifically address children and poverty; instead, they focused on immigration (Berry & Hou, 2016) and discrimination’s impact on LGBTQ individuals (Sutter & Perrin, 2016).

To obtain articles specifically about children and poverty, refining search terms or focusing on relevant subject headings could yield more appropriate results.

Using Scholarly Articles

In the study by Wang and Rodgers (2006), seven instructors from six service-learning courses participated alongside students at a Midwestern State University.

However, the generalizability of the study may be limited as it primarily focuses on students from these specific courses and institutions, thus not representing a broader population (Wang & Rodgers, 2006).

In Sutter and Perrin’s (2016) study, participants included LGBTQ individuals from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds, aged 18 and above, who completed an online survey.

The results of this study may be applicable to a wider range of LGBTQ individuals, regardless of racial background, and also to individuals from minority groups experiencing discrimination in various contexts (Sutter & Perrin, 2016).
